In “Self-Portrait with a Cigar” … and “Self-Portrait with Hat I” …, we are struck by how much like drawings these portraits look. Forms and values are indicated with the supple, grainy lines and solid areas produced by a soft crayon – one of the special options offered by the technique of lithography. P. 43.
