Sohlberg lived in Kjerringvik in Vestfold between 1907 and 1910. The area, which today is best known as a popular summer resort, attracted Sohlberg for its unique light in the winter months and the changes in the colors, which he wanted to recreate on the canvas with his unique painting technique.
Sohlberg's technique consists of a combination of clear and bold colours, applied in layers with thin layers of varnish. This makes the paintings glow from within with a sense of light. This working method is very time-consuming, which means that Sohlberg's production is comparatively very small.
