Thaulow, Frits(1847-1906)
The Marble Gate (From Bergues)

Oil on canvas
65x81
Signed lower right: Frits Thaulow.

Note on the reverse of the frame: "Galerie Georges Petit, 8, Rue de Sèze, Paris, exposition, Frits Thaulow, 5-31 Janvier 1917, ...Montaignac".

Georges Petit, one of Thaulow's Art-Dealers, held an exhibition of paintings by the artist in 1917. As evident from the text by Vidar Poulsson, and which hereby is documented on the label, one of Thaulow's other Art-Dealers, I. Montaignac, was the owner of this painting at that time.

Georges Petit (1856-1920) was one of Thaulow's most renowned Art-Dealers. The auction in 1917 had no catalogue, this was the case until recently. The catalogue exists, it turns out, proof of research going forward. Another documentation from the exhibition, is 4 photographs of the paintings hanging on the walls in the exhibition-room, and this painting "The Marble Gate" is identifiable in the topmost photograph of the four.

Provenance:

Art-Dealer I. Montaignac, Paris 1917.
