LITERATURE: Gerd Woll: Edvard Munch – The complete graphic Works, Oslo 2012.
Munch had gained access through one of his medical friends to a hospital in Paris where patients were treated for syphilis. This lithograph and cat. no. 70 (In the Hospital) show scenes from the male and female wards respectively (sic), and the two doctors as well as the overall composition are very similar in the two lithographs. The woman, who seems to be under examination, is fully dressed. Although there is no baby on her lap, the similarity to the painting "Inheritance" (MM M11, Woll 402) is quite obvious. For a later lithographic version of "Inheritance", see cat. no. 603. P. 100.
