LITTERATUR: Johan Langaard: J. C. Dahls verk (J. C. Dahl's Works), Oslo 1937, cat.no. 387.
Marie Lødrup Bang: Johan Christian Dahl, Oslo 1987, 3 Volumes, cat.no. 704, ill. Volume 3, Plate 296.
The painting is painted on paper, mounted onto canvas with glue, which is not possible to remove. It must have been done years ago, not unlikely by the artist himself. The lot is listed by Marie Lødrup Bang, in her 3 volume book on Johan Christian Dahl from 1987, as no. 704, called Road in a Village, 1832. Bang writes «Canv.», but she also writes «Present Whereabouts Unknown», so she had not seen the work herself. She knew about the work as it has a provenance up to 1985. And the work might have been No. 2 in the Dahl Sale, Copenhagen 1860: «Scene from Wachwitz near Dresden. Nature study. 1832. Oil on Canvas. 1’h. -1’21/2 br.» It was probably not taken out of the frame, it’s just by doing that one discovers that it is painted onto paper.
