The story about the hen and the golden eggs alludes to Munch's own relation with the tax authorities. In the autumn of 1938 he exhibited the drawings in Oslo, and declared that these drawings were sketches for a molbo story, which would be published as lithographs in the near future (Aftenposten 17.9.1938).
