We offer auctions, private sales, advisory services, selling exhibitions, and professional appraisals of art and collections. We assist both private clients and institutions with valuation, acquisition, and sale of artworks in the higher price segments.
Grev Wedels Plass Auksjoner (GWPA) support collectors, heirs, and institutions throughout every stage—from initial estimate and appraisal to final sale. Our seasonal auctions, including The Annual Edvard Munch Sale (Munch-Auksjonen), the Important Spring Sale (Vårens Utvalgte) and the Important Autumn Sale (Høstens Utvalgte), are key events in the Norwegian and international art market. In addition, we arrange private sales, curated exhibitions, and expert advice with personal follow-up and high professional standards.
Auctions
GWPA is recognised for its prestigious fine art auctions, attracting both Norwegian and international buyers. We specialise in Edvard Munch and Norwegian art of the highest calibre, and our sales are regarded as highlights of the auction season.
The Annual Edvard Munch Sale (Munch-Auksjonen)
“The Annual Norwegian Edvard Munch Sale” was established in 2000 and remains the world’s only auction dedicated exclusively to Edvard Munch’s works. Since its inception, more than 700 Munch works have been sold for a combined total of nearly NOK 300 million (GWPA, 2025). The sale takes place each year around Munch’s birthday, 12 December, and attracts collectors from around the world.
In the international auction market from 2000–2024, approximately 100 graphic works by Edvard Munch were sold annually on average. Of these, around 30 were sold by GWPA in Oslo through The Annual Edvard Munch Sale (Munch-Auksjonen).
Important Spring and Autumn Sales (Vårens og Høstens Utvalgte)
These seasonal sales include works by Norway’s foremost 19th- and 20th-century masters as well as established contemporary artists. The minimum estimate is typically NOK 50,000, and each sale comprises 50–80 works. In recent years, several works have achieved prices between NOK 2–3 million, while Theodor Kittelsen’s Kvitebjørn kong Valemon (1912) reached NOK 36 million in 2024 – a Norwegian auction record.
Arts on Paper (Kunst på papir)
Twice a year, GWPA hosts the Arts on Paper auction, featuring prints, drawings, pastels, and watercolours by leading Norwegian artists. Estimates start at NOK 5,000, offering both new and experienced collectors access to high-quality artworks.
Sale of Collections and Estates
GWPA manages both large and small collections, not only within fine art but also silver, glass, and antiques—provided the quality is high. We have handled everything from Kaare Berntsen’s cultural heritage collections to memorabilia from Jahn Teigen and Oslo antiques from Morten Stamnes.
Private Sales and Brokerage
Not all works are suited to public auction. For clients seeking discretion or targeted transactions, GWPA offers private sale agreements. We facilitate direct contact between sellers and serious collectors, museums, and institutions.
Benefits of private sales:
- Direct contact with qualified buyers
- Faster process than through auction
- High degree of confidentiality
- Tailored advice from our specialists
Selling Exhibitions
GWPA organises selling exhibitions of both historical and contemporary art of the highest quality. These exhibitions allow the public to experience and acquire selected works outside the auction calendar while providing established contemporary artists with a professional platform for presentation. We have held exhibitions featuring artists such as Axel Thorenfeldt.
Benefits for exhibiting artists and collectors:
- Curatorial quality and professional presentation
- Targeted exposure to an international audience
- Marketing and sales support from the GWPA team
Advisory Services
With over three decades of experience, we provide professional guidance on how best to assess and sell artworks. Our expertise enables us to recommend the optimal approach for each individual work.

Appraisals
GWPA conducts professional appraisal of art and collections across Norway. Each assignment is documented with formal appraisal papers suitable for insurance, inheritance, or sale purposes.
Inheritance Appraisals
In estate settlements, an inheritance appraisal provides a fair and documented value distribution. We assess artworks, antiques, and valuable objects and issue an official document as a basis for settlement.
Insurance Appraisals
An insurance appraisal provides an overview of the value of a collection and can be used when arranging household or art insurance, relocation, or inheritance. The document includes a full overview and market-based valuations.
Appraisal and Realisation of Entire Estates
We provide complete appraisal and realisation of estates and collections containing art, silver, glass, or furniture in the higher price range. The service covers everything from valuation to logistics and sale, with fees agreed in advance.
